What's It Like Doing Work You Love?

I wasn’t sure I’d ever be able to answer that question. But here I sit today, a lucky girl. I’m wearing shorts and a t-shirt as I type this entry in my office in my home. It’s a holiday, and I’m working happily. In fact, I’ve been working non-stop for ten days straight. I’ve been writing, creating, dreaming, planning, plotting to get my website, LeavingTheLaw.com, up.

I am deeply engaged in my work. I was talking to my parents recently and telling them about a project I was working on that day. My dad teased me, saying, “No more Sunday afternoon blues.” I had no idea it was Sunday. When I practiced law, I knew it was Sunday all day Sunday, as I counted down the hours until I had to go back to work.

Sometimes, I’m so happy that I get to do work I love that I wiggle in my chair. I giggle and sing snatches of songs out loud. I have to be careful when I talk to other lawyers. I dampen my enthusiasm for my work because they don’t want to hear how giddy I am. But I can’t hide it. You can see it in my face. One of my friends asked me, “Are you engaged? You’re glowing!”

I’m surrounded by people I love working with. My clients are incredible—so funny, so fun, so insightful, so creative. And I’ve developed partnerships with people who are supportive and enthusiastic about what I’m doing, like my web designer, my virtual assistant, my coach.

My time is completely my own. I choose what I’m working on and who I’m working with. I get to decide if I want to spend ten days working non-stop and two weeks goofing off. Now, mind you, that’s because I’m an entrepreneur. But if you have a secret desire to have your own business, I want you to know about those benefits too.

I want this same joy, this same blessing, for you. What are you willing to do/give up to get it?
